Trader Joe’s Red Pepper Spread

Quite honestly, I don’t remember why I bought this product. I think it was one of those browsing moments that went something like this, “Hmm, looks interesting and look its cheap!” Memory says it was $2-3. A couple months later I discovered it in my cupboard and decided it needed to be used up.

Straight-up on a cracker, this spread is a little strong for me. It has a very strong roasted pepper flavor although I don’t find it spicy. I like roasted peppers, but it was a little too much on its own. I suggest heating it slightly and then serving it over cream cheese or a soft cheese as an appetizer.

The first thing I used it for was as a marinade for chicken. It didn’t quite turn out the way I had expected it to, but the results were delicious. I spread it over the chicken and kept it in the fridge for two days. When I opened the container, I was surprised to see that the spread had not broken or loosened in any way. It still penetrated the chicken and gave it excellent flavor. I tossed the chicken with some spaghetti squash and other veggies. Even after heating the spread it didn’t loosen up, I had to add a fair amount of wine to the pan to create a sauce. It turned out great.

Next up I added it to some jar spaghetti sauce. I liked this combination better. The tomato sauce toned down the intense roasted pepper flavor while the spread gave new depth to a run of the mill spaghetti sauce. Again, I had to add some wine to the sauce as it was just too thick. This was my favorite way to use this spread.

I haven’t used it in this way, but the label suggests using it as a spread for chicken or turkey sandwiches. I think it would make an excellent sandwich spread, much healthier than mayo, but I’m thinking more along the lines of roast beef, salami, or something else that can stand up to that intense roasted pepper flavor.

Surprisingly this product only has eight ingredients, very few for a processed food. I can even pronounce all of them and I recognize them all as food products! Something else important about his product, its gluten free and vegan! The one drawback to the product is the overpowering red pepper flavor. Although they list eggplant and garlic in the title, you don’t really notice them. I’d be much happier if the name was simply Roasted Red Pepper Spread.

Try this product, especially if you like red peppers. Get creative and let me know how it went!
